Parkland School

Parkland School is an abandoned school in the Parkland neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

History

Parkland School was constructed in 1891 at the corner of at Catalpa (today’s South 28th) and Dumesnil Streets in the Parkland neighborhood of Louisville.(1) As the neighborhood grew, so did the school, and additions were constructed in 1910 and 1968. The later addition included a gymnasium, new front entrance and cafeteria. In 1985, the public school was renamed for Milburn Taylor Maupin, the first African-American central office administrator for the city public school system. Maupin served as an interim superintendent from January to June 1975, and retired as deputy superintendent in 1978.

In 1997, a new elementary school was constructed across 28th Street, and the former Parkland School was closed.(1)
