While the town is not exactly abandoned, it has seen more prosperous days. Once known as the ‘Iron capital of the world’ due to the rich iron-ore fields to the north, Ironton, Ohio saw its greatest fortunes come from heavy industry. During the 1970s and 1980s, many industries closed, leaving thousands jobless. The town was referred to as being located in the ‘rust belt’ and is only just now recovering after many years of neglect.

Ironton is by no means abandoned and is no different from any other south eastern Ohio or North eastern Kentucky river towns.
It’s kinda sad driving through Ironton. You see the old Ironton Iron, Allied Chemical, and Wilson factories/plants. The old wolohan lumber and all that I think it’s kinda sad.
Looks like the future for Detroit. Drugs are getting reaaally bad.
True, Ironton isn’t ‘abandoned’, but a whole generation had to pretty much move away (just like Portsmouth down river) when everything hit the fan in the late 1980′s. We had to find work, and we sure weren’t going to sit on our heels waiting for goverment intervention. Sadly, when the government DID move in, the void ‘we’ left was filled by folks from out of state who DID want the handouts.
Since then, most all of the historical buildings and landmarks have been completely torn down or abandoned, as those who moved in hand no ‘dog in the fight’, so it was just another building to them.
I’m sad for the whole valley up there. Everything I knew is pretty much gone now, and the only thing left are my families graves….and we helped SETTLE the area!
Sigh.
