The Crowell Publishing Company was the world’s largest magazine publishing house and the manufacturing plant was located in Springfield, Ohio. By the early 1900s, Crowell was home to The American Magazine, The Woman’s Home Companion, Collier’s, The National Weekly, Farm and Fireside and The Mentor, among others.(1) It had a monthly circulation of over 10 million copies with an average of ten carloads of magazines produced per working day.
The facility featured artesian wells beneath the building, from which all water consumed is pumped from.(1) During the winter, a plant within Crowell manufactured gas for use as a replacement for natural gas, saving costs.
An expansion of the facilities in 1915 brought the total amount of manufacturing and office space to more than 350,000 square feet, employing 2,000.(1)
